How to read this page

This is an educational reference, not medical advice and not a description of any product. Aromatherapy research is young: many trials are small, short, and hard to blind (people can tell when a room smells of lavender), so pleasant expectation can inflate results. We report findings and their limits, and we grade the weight of evidence honestly. Nothing here is a claim that any Elemental Scents blend treats, prevents, or cures a condition — our blends are made for scent and ritual.

For anyone running their own tests

We focus on wellbeing outcomes — clarity, calm, mood, sleep, alertness — not disease. These are what the better aromatherapy studies actually measure, using validated instruments you can use too: the PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) for sleep, the STAI and HAM-A for state anxiety, the POMS or a simple visual-analogue mood scale for mood, timed cognitive test batteries for clarity and alertness, and physiological read-outs like blood pressure, heart-rate variability, salivary cortisol and EEG. If you test a scent yourself, the honest design is simple: a control scent or no-scent condition, the same task or scale before and after, and awareness that you can't fully "blind" a smell — so keep expectation in mind when you read your own results.

Lavender

Lavandula angustifoliaGrade A

Most-studied compounds: linalool, linalyl acetate · Studied for: anxiety, sleep, mood

Lavender is the best-evidenced oil in the field, but the strength depends on how it is taken. A standardised oral capsule (Silexan) outperformed placebo — and matched a common anti-anxiety drug — for generalised anxiety across large double-blind trials. Inhaled lavender (true aromatherapy) shows calming effects in many small studies but rests on weaker ground than the capsule.

On sleep, inhaled lavender fares better: a systematic review of 20 randomised trials found 14 reported improved sleep quality (measured by the PSQI), including in people without a diagnosed sleep disorder — a squarely wellbeing outcome.

The honest limit: for anxiety, a leading review notes inhaled lavender "has not been supported by sufficient evidence" to the standard of the oral capsule — the robust anxiety data is for a swallowed preparation, a different product category from a diffuser oil.

Peppermint

Mentha × piperitaGrade B

Most-studied compounds: menthol, menthone · Studied for: nausea, alertness

Inhaling peppermint oil reduced the frequency, duration and severity of nausea in trials of post-surgical and chemotherapy patients, and a meta-analysis of aromatherapy for cancer-related nausea found a significant overall benefit.

The honest limit: reviewers stress the trials are few and small, and because a fragrant intervention can't be hidden from patients, some of the effect may be expectation rather than the oil itself.

Rosemary

Rosmarinus officinalisGrade B

Most-studied compound: 1,8-cineole · Studied for: alertness, memory, mood

In a study of 144 volunteers, breathing rosemary aroma improved speed and accuracy on cognitive tasks — and the effect tracked the amount of 1,8-cineole absorbed into the blood, a rare case of a measurable dose-response linking an aroma compound to performance.

The honest limit: effects are modest, measured in lab settings on healthy adults, and short-term; this is "alertness in a test," not a treatment for any condition.

Lemon

Most-studied compound: limonene · Studied for: positive mood, alertness, clarity

Lemon has some of the cleaner "uplift" data among citruses: an EEG study found task performance improved after lemon inhalation, alongside prefrontal-cortex activation linked to attention, and an earlier landmark study reported lemon reliably enhanced positive mood where lavender did not.

The honest limit: brain-imaging studies are small and measure activation, not everyday outcomes; "improved mood in a lab task" is a wellbeing signal, not a clinical effect.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus globulusGrade A

Most-studied compound: 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) · Studied for: respiratory comfort, congestion

Its main compound, eucalyptol, is one of the few aroma molecules with robust human trials: purified cineole significantly reduced coughing fits versus placebo in patients with acute bronchitis, and controlled studies show anti-inflammatory and mucus-reducing effects in sinusitis and asthma.

The honest limit: the strongest trials use high-dose oral cineole capsules, a medicine — not a few drops in a diffuser. The trials support the molecule, not a specific diffusing dose.

Bergamot

Citrus bergamiaGrade B

Most-studied compounds: limonene, linalyl acetate · Studied for: stress, positive mood, sleep

Fifteen minutes of bergamot in a mental-health clinic waiting room raised patients' positive feelings by about 17% versus control, and a randomised crossover trial reported improved self-rated stress and sleep quality with bedtime use.

The honest limit: these are small pilot studies with self-reported outcomes; bergamot is also phototoxic on skin in sunlight, so skin use needs a bergapten-free (FCF) oil.

Chamomile

Matricaria chamomillaGrade B

Most-studied compounds: bisabolol, chamazulene, apigenin · Studied for: sleep, anxiety

A systematic review found chamomile had a significant positive effect on generalised anxiety and sleep quality, and inhalation trials in people with insomnia and in cardiac patients report reduced anxiety scores.

The honest limit: evidence is genuinely mixed — some meta-analyses of anxiety trials found no significant difference, and much of the strongest data is for oral chamomile, not inhalation.

Ylang Ylang

Cananga odorataGrade B

Most-studied compounds: linalool, benzyl acetate · Studied for: calm, blood pressure, heart rate

Inhaling ylang ylang lowered blood pressure and heart rate and made volunteers rate themselves calmer and more relaxed across several small controlled studies — one of the more consistent "physical relaxation" signals in the aroma literature.

The honest limit: samples are small (dozens, not hundreds) and short-term; a drop in blood pressure in a lab is not evidence of treating hypertension.

Sweet Orange

Citrus sinensisGrade B

Most-studied compound: limonene · Studied for: situational anxiety, sleep

Sweet orange aroma reduced anxiety in randomised trials during labour and dental treatment, and a bitter-orange (Citrus aurantium) trial in postmenopausal women reported improved sleep-quality scores.

The honest limit: effects are situational (measured in stressful moments), outcomes are self-reported, and high-quality trials for everyday sleep are still lacking.

Frankincense

Boswellia sacra / carteriiGrade C

Most-studied compounds: incensole acetate, boswellic acids · Studied for: anxiety, calm

Small trials of inhaled frankincense report reduced anxiety (for example before a medical procedure), and lab work shows a frankincense compound, incensole acetate, can activate calming ion channels in the brain — a plausible mechanism for its long ceremonial use.

The honest limit: human evidence is early and thin; systematic reviews conclude the aromatherapy data for anxiety is still insufficient and of low quality. Treat this as promising tradition, not proof.

Sandalwood

Santalum albumGrade C

Most-studied compound: alpha-santalol · Studied for: focused attention, grounding

In the same EEG study, sandalwood inhalation produced beta and gamma activation in the prefrontal cortex — the brain-wave pattern associated with focused attention rather than drowsiness, fitting its traditional use for grounded concentration in meditation.

The honest limit: this rests largely on a single small brain-activity study; there is little randomised trial data on real-world focus or wellbeing outcomes yet.

Traditional, but not yet well-trialled

Several oils we love carry centuries of traditional use but only limited modern human trials — so we won't pretend otherwise. Vetiver and patchouli appear mainly in animal and small pilot relaxation studies. Cedarwood (cedrol) has early sleep-related work. Sweet marjoram shows up in blended massage trials, rarely alone. Turmeric has extensive research as an ingested extract, but very little as an inhaled aroma. We use these for their scent and their place in the tradition; we make no research claim for them until the trials exist.
